UMSKIPTINGAR transports you to the mystical landscapes of Iceland, where elves and hidden people from the stories and legends of the region coexist with the human population. Each piece acts as a portal to a hidden world where fantasy and reality merge in a dance of light and shadow. Elves and hidden people are integral to Icelandic folklore and culture. Growing up, I would hear cautionary tales about elves meant to keep children from mischief. Drawing inspiration from the draping of Icelandic landscapes and nature, my silhouettes reflect the guardianship role elves are believed to play in the rugged, often harsh Icelandic terrain. In my collection, dark elves are represented by sturdy, dark silhouettes, while light elves are depicted with softer, lighter forms. The choice of fabrics was crucial, and experimenting with various textures like faux fur and latex to evoke elements of Icelandic nature, such as mountains and lava, has led to unexpected and exciting results. I have a spontaneous approach to creating my textiles, experimenting ‘in the moment’ has lead to some unexpected outcomes, ensuring that no piece is exactly the same. This collection celebrates these mystical beings, appreciating the nature they inhabit, and imagining what the elves would look like if we could see them.
