I am Iris Zhiting Guo, a womenswear designer specialising in creative pattern cutting and craftsmanship. My FMP titled “The Remains of the Day” is inspired by the abandoned ruins I saw during a hike in Taiwan. Seeing the juxtaposition of natural abundance and the fleeting manmade brought my awareness to the transience of life. This project illustrates the ephemerality of human experiences and the strong correspondences between earth and body. Through creating and sourcing my textiles, my collection is crafted with natural fabrics, knit, thread, and clay accessories that are all biodegradable. Responding to the concept of the ‘remains’ and the simplicity of indigenous dressing, I used subtraction and zero-waste cutting techniques to construct my 3D, resulting in simple timeless silhouettes that also minimise waste. As a designer committed to delivering authentic clothing with story-telling and exquisite refinement, my work is crafted with immense care and concentration on craftsmanship.
