As a womenswear designer, I discover that through my work, I am able to effectively communicate various societal issues that were either ignored or difficult to bring up in the social setting in which I was raised. This was also my project's original goal, and I believe it helps to express some issues that have long existed between parents and children in Chinese families. Growing up in a Chinese family, in the quiet depths of our souls, where love and obligation entwine, we confront the paradox of filial ties. Within the delicate balance of parental affection lies a suffocating embrace, a silent but binding force that shapes our very existence. We acknowledge the love of our parents, an undeniable force that courses through our veins, anchoring us to tradition and heritage. Yet, within this love, we find ourselves ensnared, caught in the grip of expectations and obligations that weigh heavy on our hearts. We bear the scars of their love, a testament to the complexities of familial bonds. We refuse to be silenced by the chains of tradition, to be confined by the expectations of generations past. We strive for understanding, for empathy in the face of adversity, and for liberation from the guilt that threatens to consume us.We call for a reckoning, a breaking of the silent filial chains that bind us, a reclaiming of our autonomy and individuality within the context of familial love. We seek harmony, not through suppression, but through honest dialogue and mutual respect. To the parents among us, we extend a heartfelt plea: Engage in open, equal conversations with your children. See them not as extensions of yourselves, but as individuals deserving of autonomy and respect. Break free from the constraints of tradition and embrace the opportunity to foster healthy relationships.
