I consider myself an ethical designer of unisex garments. For my final collection ‘Do you care?’, I was strong influenced by a recent passing of a relative and the belongings she curated over her lifetime. These textiles ultimately were the strongest influence in my practice as I designed with her in mind, striving to reincarnate her spirit in the garments. I wanted to allow her community joy through seeing her in the garments I created. Child-like shapes and youthful romanticism are a running theme through my research alongside the culture of make and mend, which I feel in imperative if we are to continue to thrive in a sustainable way in the future. I wanted to capture the joy of innocence and childhood reflected through unconventional but functional shapes that are all about finer details. I love consuming knowledge about historical influences and how they shape the fashion industry of today. I think this lends itself well to the nostalgic romanticism that my garments exude. I am most passionate about sustainability and designing for longevity. I would like to increase my generation’s understanding of where their clothes come from and the consequences of the fast fashion production chain. I think when it comes down to it, care is ultimately the most sustainable way of designing as it is builds meaning into the pieces and makes in indispensable.
