University Lecturer

University lecturers are essential for developing the next generation of fashion students, often lecturers have been working designers themselves, either with their own brand or in house for someone else. Lecturing can be done on a freelance basis, ‘guest lecturing’ or ‘associate lecturing’, or they can be full time staff at a university.

Lecturers will likely be a specialist in a particular area of study as part of a fashion course, e.g; knitwear, CAD design, pattern cutting etc. and will teach specific lectures on those subjects. The ability to inspire and educate students are crucial for a lecturer, who will be both teaching as well as mentoring students as they progress through their chosen course.

Prior degrees or specific qualifications are usually required for full time lecturers, this can change and focus more on industry experience in the case of associate lecturers. Good organisation and communication skills are needed, to plan course structures as well as ensuring they will be understood by students. Passion for the subject and technical skills to demonstrate skills in classes are also needed.
