Periodical Panic

Periodical Panic is a visual collection exploring the emotional response to bad news. It is a powerful exploration of the emotional turmoil stirred by current events, turning anxiety into a provocative statement that demands attention. I have investigated the adverse impact of alarmist journalism on mental health. The starting point of my project was exploring newspapers and considering their physical properties, such as colour, weight, and material. The project captures the essence of Panic and anxiety sparked by reading newspapers, transforming these emotions into bold designs. Utilising a palette of paperwhites, greys and ominous blacks with a splash of scarlet. The patterns and motives are inspired by distorted typography. The collection is androgynous, allowing individuals of any gender to engage with and interpret the pieces according to their personal style. My project concept came about in response to my personal feelings towards the news and journalism I was consuming. I took inspiration from artists such as Barbara Kruger, Jenny Holzer and Kameelah Janan Rasheed, all of whom investigate the use of text in art.
