Letter from London February 2014

"The month ahead will shine the spotlight on London’s creative industries as London Fashion Week, the BAFTA Film Awards and the Brit Awards will showcase the very best of each industry's outstanding talents in the space of just six days. The capital has an inimitable reputation for its abundant cultural scenes, the fusion of film, music and fashion a powerful force that resonates the world over.  In fashion, last month culminated with Peter Pilotto winning the BFC / Vogue Designer Fashion Fund and our heartfelt congratulations go the talented design duo behind the label. Peter Pilotto dresses are no stranger to the worlds of film and music having graced red carpets both here and overseas – from Selena Gomez, Emma Watson, Carey Mulligan, Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Naomie Harris, Jennifer Lawrence, Kristen Stewart, Kerry Washington, Sienna Miller, Lupita Nyongo and Kate Bosworth to Rihanna, the list of Pilotto fans working in the arts is inexhaustible. There will always be a mutual affection and dependency between industries that rely on artistic, creative energy, and the result is illustrative of culture, often capturing some of the iconic moments that throughout history define the character of a country. In the 1970s Vivienne Westwood and Malcom McLaren’s Chelsea boutique SEX served up clothing that captured the zeitgeist of Britain’s punk era. The 1980s was defined by the gender bending New Romantics and David Bowie who singlehandedly brought about seismic cultural shifts in music, film and fashion. The 1990s evokes the rebirth of the parka accompanied by a Britpop soundtrack courtesy of Trainspotting which leads us up to the 2000s and beyond.  With film icons and musicians headlining fashion campaigns (watch this space for Paul Weller in the new Daks campaign), fashion designers creating custom made costumes for the stage and screen and photographers creating cinematic fashion film campaigns it is clear there is nothing perfunctory about these collaborations; by combining forces the creative industries have a stronger voice - one that we hope you’ll join us in celebrating this February."

– Caroline Rush, Chief Executive of the British Fashion Council
