Inside out back to front

Constance Strutt

Location: Manchester, United Kingdom
University/College: Manchester Fashion Institute Specialisms: womenswear design, draping, illustration, creative pattern cutting and hand sewing
In my graduate collection, I explored growing up and transitioning from childhood to adulthood. I blended country attire with luxury evening wear using silk and wax cotton. The collection, mostly one-off pieces, required meticulous draping and hand-sewing for intricate details. My research involves film, vintage footage, and archival photos, focusing on influential women of history. Starting with undergarments, I progress from the skin to intricate details, reconstructing garments for modern consumers. Using a mannequin, fabric, and traditional elements like crinoline skirts, I sculpt shapes. My references span Jacobean to Edwardian era fashion books, refreshed for contemporary garments. During university, I developed a passion for pattern manipulation and cutting. A 3-month internship honed my attention to detail and couture finishes. Ultimately, I aim to create a modern look by referencing the past to craft for the present.
