Villefloure: Above and Below

This collection arose from revisiting endless photographs from childhood summers in the French countryside of Villefloure; dressed by my mum in a camouflage of the colours of the scenery. I explore the dualism of childhood nostalgia through contrasting colours: recalling dream-like landscapes through soft hues, contrasted with the bright, artificial objects like kites and plastic toys. The synthetic colours manifested in simple undergarments, determined by colour theory: cobalt blue, coral and yellow. I used natural staining as a means of achieving the subdued colours of the knit structures, finishing around eighty small cones of dead-stock yarn. I unravelled sections with any mistakes to reuse the yarn, and employed darning as a solution for any moth-holes, acknowledging the fragility of knitwear. The garments are a physical manifestation of my love for sculpture and ready-to-wear: existing with the kite-inspired structures as wearable-sculptures, but also as everyday garments. A transferable form is always important to my practise: creating something that could exist in an everyday retail space, but also in an art gallery- a dichotomy I will pursue further throughout my practise.
