My final year exhibition was inspired by the three African materials: Ghana bag, raffia, beads. My research found these materials to be prominent in Western design and clothes manufacturing since the 17th century. The six garments I designed for this exhibition used knitting, embroidery and beading techniques. The fabric Tartan, which is a patterned cloth consisting of criss-crossed horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colours is the core interconnection between African and Western fashion design influences. It has been associated with several cultures, including Scottish, Irish, Indian, Caribbean and African, particularly Congo and Ghana.
