My name is Awwal, and my work is deeply inspired by my African heritage. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, I was raised in a family where tradition and culture were integral parts of daily life. I have always been fascinated by the rich tapestry of African aesthetics and history. This fascination, combined with my interest in movies, sparked my pursuit of fashion and design. My curiosity led me to study at Middlesex University London to further develop my skills and knowledge of garment construction and design. This fusion of traditional African influences and contemporary Western education has allowed me to create designs that are innovative and profoundly respectful of my roots. A key element of my design philosophy is sustainability, which is pivotal to my African traditional practices in the construction of various materials. This commitment is evident in my collection through the use of cowry shells, which hold significant cultural and historical importance in many African societies. By combining the shells with other materials within the collection, I pay homage to my heritage while promoting sustainability. I explore the aesthetic and notion of Afrocentric design language through Afrofuturism, a cultural aesthetic that combines African traditions with futuristic elements. This approach is essential to my design practice, creating a world where African-inspired clothing leads the charge in innovative and eco-friendly fashion. Afrofuturism and the celebration of key figures within the Black community who have significantly contributed to the identity and success of people of color inspire my collection. Icons such as Mae Jemison, Don Cornelius, and Judith Jamison sparked the concept of "Hidden Figures." As a Black designer, it is essential for me to honor these individuals whose contributions have not received the recognition they deserve.
